They just don't get it

Postby Ricky » Tue May 04, 2010 11:07 pm

What do you say when some well-meaning person asks "What's the matter?" It's hard enough to answer "How are you?" with "Fine. Great!" because you know they don't really want to know..."what's the matter?" "Nothing! Why?"
What about "I am depressed." "About what?" "Well, no, actually I have depression." "......oh......" (Now they know you are someone to keep away from.) "What can I do?" "Nothing. Really, it's okay, don't worry about it....." because now I realize that this is NOT socially acceptable and god forbid it is in the workplace. Besides, I'm a caretaker....I will take care of my own depression, don't want to worry you with it, let me help you feel more comfortable, please.

They just don't get it.

Ricky, you are so right, they 'don't get it'. We manage, someway, that is what is amazing.

Think my favorite reply is "Get over it"! Like duh, if I could I would!!

Keep venting here, we listen and we do understand the hell we all live.

Hi Ricky,

It's true - if someone doesn't have depression there is really no way you can tell them about it and have them understand. Coming to this site and talking to a counselor or going to a group where others are going through the same thing is the only thing that's going to give you the support you need. I hope you can find help . . . we all need that.

Take care,
Wonder
