" Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren't they just stale bread to begin with? "
This is a trick question isn't it, (((( Warmie ))))! You already know the answer, don't you? You're just being modest...
Croutons come in airtight packages precisely BECAUSE they are stale bread to begin with.
When you open an airtight package of croutons you can be confident that inside you will find pieces of stale, dry bread, just as stale and dry as they were when they were packed in the factory.
But, imagine that croutons were not packed in airtight packages...
Assume for the sake of argument a crouton manufacturer in, say, Seattle, USA, decides to sell croutons in boxes or bags rather than airtight packages.
Without the airtight packaging by the time they reached the consumer they might well have been contaminated with damp air, rain water, or other moisture. Any number of consumers would open their croutons to find that their pieces of stale bread weren't stale anymore, but were actually pieces of damp bread!
Panic would ensue as chefs, desperate for proper, stale croutons, found themselves never knowing how many of their purchased croutons would be stale and how many would be damp and unusable...
As the supply of proper, stale not damp, croutons dwindled..." crouton wars " would break out as armed militias fought each other over pieces of stale bread...!
The situation would spread from Washington state to every other state. The US government tries to restore order, but by this stage Americans have lost all faith in their local, state and Federal institutions...
Afterall, why should anyone trust a Federal government that can't even guarantee it's citizens a reliable supply of pieces of airtight packaged stale bread?!
As the United States collapses in " crouton chaos ", Mexico and Canada are destabilised, North and South America slide into political, social and military chaos...
There is a knock-on global economic, social and political crisis...Seeing the Earth to be weak the Romulans invade laying waste to whole continents...!!!!
And this is why croutons come in airtight packages...
