" There is no monument dedicated to the memory of a committee. "
Am I the only person who thinks that this is grossly unfair?!
Afterall, committees serve many useful purposes. They allow people to meet other people. How many friendships, business relationships and love affairs have begun by two people meeting while serving on the same committee?
Also, committees play an important, perhaps even vital, task in slowing the process of government to a safe pace. ( Or, slow crawl, if you want to be picky about it...

) Afterall, what would happen if every government " initiative ", " plan " or " bright idea " was implemented immediately and as originally planned?!

Committees play a vital role in making sure that a lot of the " novel " things that politicians try to do never actually happen. And do they get the respect and affection they deserve for this. NO!
Also, the committee process allows measures to be thought through, pondered, considered, meditated upon, weighed-up, re-pondered, debated, re-considered, examined, re-debated,...
For example, the United Kingdom Committee of Enquiry into the Loss and Possible Re-Conquest of His Majesty's American Colonies, set up in 1783, is expected to complete it's deliberations quite soon...In a few years,...Or a few decades...Well, certainly before the end of this century...Probably...

*
And the Committee of Enquiry into Defence Issues Facing His Majesty's Realm in the New Century, established in 1780, is VERY close to reporting. Unofficial leaks from this committee have identified a possibility of the French Monarchy being overthrown, and that a French military officer called Napoleon Bonaparte might have ambitions to expand his personal power. ( Although, some members of this committee have described these comments as " Needlessly alarmist. " ) **
Also, committees provide much useful employment and investment into the global economy. Without committees, uncounted numbers of secretaries, ushers, etc, etc, would be unemployed. Vast buildings of committee rooms would stand empty, or never be built, destroying vast numbers of construction jobs...
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury...I submit to you that committees ARE worthy of monuments. Commitees: among the secret heroes of the Human Race!
( * PS to our American " cousins ", don't worry, I made this one up! The British are NOT coming! Well, only as tourists...!

)
( ** And this one too!
