Every time I cook something, particularly if I'm making toast, I switch the light on in my shower.
No, that's not a rather strange Welsh custom!

There is a certain architectural logic behind it. The way my flat is laid out, my kitchen is right next to my shower. There is a smoke alarm in my kitchen that is VERY sensitive!

However in my shower there is an extractor-fan that starts operating as soon as the light is switched on. So, if I'm cooking, I can prevent any trace of smoke setting off the fire-alarm by switching on the light and extractor fan in my shower, and leaving the door between my kitchen and shower open, so the extractor-fan will remove any smoke from the kitchen before it can set off the fire alarm!
Making toast can be more complicated than people think
