Hi, I am suffering from an anxiety disorder. I am undergoing cognitive behavior therapy for my problem. But now, I am having another problem with my ears. I am hearing some kind of whistling sound in my ears. My hearing doesn't have any problem. I thought it might be related to my anxiety and will reduce according to the treatment. So I didn't give much care to this. As of now, I am really irritated with this anonymous sound in my ears. I can't concentrate on my anxiety therapies and sessions due to this. Then I shared this with my therapist. She told me that it might be anxiety related but need some clarifications. So she suggested me to consult an audiology specialist in London for audiometry test. I am planning to take an appointment for this. But before taking the treatment, I have some doubts regarding this. I shared this problem with my friends. One of my friends told me that it is tinnitus. I am confused about this. Is this anxiety related or some other ear problem? Is it possible to treat tinnitus? If anybody knows about this, please help me with your replies.

I have a similar symptom where I hear a "ringing". I've determined it is defiantly from anxiety and panic episodes. I'm quite certain that when the anxiety makes me tense, clench my jaw, and have a tense/ridged posture. This causes my "ringing" due to increased tension in my facial muscles, neck, jaw and so on. That then puts pressure on the ear canal or other parts similar to if one were to hang upside-down long enough for blood to pool in the head creating a ringing sensation from the increased pressure.

A possible self-test you could try is to recognize when your state of mind is without (or with very mild) anxiety, stress, or other tensions. See if the "whistling" is heard. If so, is it better or worse than times of the anxiety in its severe forms?

Best of luck. Hope the answers you discover bring you peace of mind.
